History: Battle of 1066

This week, we recapped the events of 1066 and explored the Battle of Hastings. We began by studying a picture of the battle and using our inference skills to work out what was happening and what we could learn from the image.
To deepen our understanding, we re-enacted the Battle of Hastings. The children took on the roles of the Normans preparing to attack and the Anglo-Saxons defending their position at the top of Senlac Hill. We also acted out the Norman cavalry's clever tactics, which tricked the Anglo-Saxons and helped secure William's victory.
We have thoroughly enjoyed our Vikings topic, and learning about the events of 1066 has been a fantastic way to conclude the unit. I have been particularly impressed by the links the children have made between their learning about the Vikings and their knowledge of the Anglo-Saxons from Year 5. It has been wonderful to see them draw on their prior learning and make thoughtful connections across different periods of history.
Have a lovely weekend.
