21st November - it's Enterprise Week!
We’ve had an exciting and very busy Enterprise Week in Year 1. The children have been learning all about money, budgeting, spending wisely and working together to raise funds. Here’s what we’ve been up to each day:
We started the week by learning about saving and spending. The children were given a class pot of money and lots of tempting opportunities to spend it on toys! However, they soon discovered that spending money early in the week would mean there wouldn’t be enough left for our special class movie with popcorn and juice on Thursday. This led to some brilliant discussions about making sensible choices with money.
On Tuesday, we thought about how we could make money as a class. We discussed:
-
How to invest a little to make a profit
-
How to set prices
-
What we could sell for the best return
The children decided to sell flapjacks and hot chocolate at the end of the week. In the afternoon, they worked hard creating colourful posters to advertise the sale around school.
In small groups, the children worked with Mrs Bennett to make delicious flapjacks. Everyone took turns measuring, mixing and preparing the trays. It was a brilliant hands-on experience that linked maths, teamwork and life skills.
On Thursday, we carefully packaged and labelled all the flapjacks, ready for selling on Friday. Then came the big moment… Had the children saved enough money for the movie? Yes, they had! Since they resisted spending their pot earlier in the week, we enjoyed a lovely class movie with popcorn and juice before lunch.
On Friday morning, we prepared for the big sale. The children chose roles such as:
-
Taking payments
-
Adding marshmallows to hot chocolates
-
Serving flapjacks
-
Welcoming customers
We finally opened our doors and welcomed parents to buy our flapjacks and hot chocolates. The children were amazing entrepreneurs—polite, organised, and enthusiastic! Thank you so much parents and carers for your continued support (and purchases!).
